Nov 15, 2024Blog

Utah’s diverse landscapes come alive with vibrant colors during the fall season. Rich red hues, bright yellows, and golden ambers paint the scenery, making it the perfect backdrop for autumn adventures. With so many seasonal activities to enjoy, there’s something for everyone.

Top 8 Must-Do Fall Activities in Utah

Utah offers a stunning array of fall activities for locals and visitors. From scenic hikes through colorful foliage to charming pumpkin patches, there’s something for everyone during this magical season. We’ll highlight the top eight must-do activities that showcase the best of Utah’s fall, along with the best hotel rooms to book during your Utah adventure.

1. Hike Through Utah’s Autumn Foliage

Although most people imagine deserts when they think of Utah, some fantastic spots are filled with lush trees and other wildlife. Witnessing the seasonal transformation of trees and other plants firsthand is one of Utah’s most captivating fall experiences.

Here are some of our staff’s favorite spots to spot autumn foliage around the state:

  1. Big Cottonwood Canyon—Near Salt Lake City, this canyon is known for its scenic drives and hikes, including Lake Blanche and Donut Falls. The aspen and maple trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, especially in early to mid-October.
  2. Little Cottonwood Canyon – Neighboring Big Cottonwood, this area is just as stunning. Trails like Cecret Lake and Red Pine Lake offer breathtaking views with surrounding foliage in vibrant fall colors.
  3. Zion National Park – The park’s lower elevation means fall colors peak a bit later, typically in November. The Canyon Overlook Trail and Angel’s Landing are perfect for spotting colorful foliage along the canyon walls.
  4. Alpine Loop Scenic Byway – This scenic byway connects Provo Canyon and American Fork Canyon and passes through many beautiful forests. Hikes along Mount Timpanogos (such as Timpooneke Trail) showcase aspens turning gold against evergreen pines, with scenic views in every direction.
  5. Nebo Loop Scenic Byway—Near Payson, this loop offers access to trails like Loafer Mountain and Grotto Falls. The area is known for the vibrant colors of maple and aspen trees and is a quieter alternative to the Cottonwood Canyons.
  6. Millcreek Canyon—Located near Salt Lake City, Millcreek offers various trails, like the Desolation Trail to Grandeur Peak, with stunning panoramic views. The fall foliage here peaks in October.
  7. Logan Canyon—Northern Utah’s Logan Canyon offers hikes like Wind Caves Trail and Tony Grove Lake Trail. Here, aspens and maples show off striking colors, usually peaking in late September to early October.
  8. Capitol Reef National Park—Known for its unique red rock formations and Fremont River valley, hikes like the Fremont River Trail offer a mix of desert landscape and fall foliage, with trees along the river turning golden in October.
  9. Fishlake National Forest – Home to Pando, the world’s largest aspen grove and oldest living organism, this forest is magnificent in the fall as the aspens turn golden-yellow. The Fish Lake Hightop Trail offers scenic views of the foliage.
  10. Bryce Canyon National Park – While it’s more famous for its rock formations, the contrast between red hoodoos and yellow aspens around Mossy Cave Trail and Fairyland Loop creates a unique fall hiking experience.

Depending on elevation and location, these spots vary in peak times, generally from late September to early November.

2. Do a Scenic Drive Along the Alpine Loop

A scenic drive is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Utah’s fall beauty. The Alpine Loop, in particular, is a must-see route in autumn. This route connects American Fork Canyon to Provo Canyon, about an hour south of Salt Lake.

Winding through breathtaking mountain landscapes, this drive treats you to a spectacular display of vibrant fall colors. The foliage along the loop, from golden aspens to fiery red maples, creates a visual masterpiece. Whether looking for a relaxing afternoon or a leisurely weekend outing, this scenic route offers an unforgettable way to connect with nature.

To drive the Alpine Loop:

  • Begin at the mouth of American Fork Canyon, accessible via SR-92 (Timpanogos Highway) from Highland.
  • The loop exits into Provo Canyon near Sundance and U.S. Route 189, close to Provo.

3. Attend the Moab Music Festival

The Moab Music Festival is a must-do event for music lovers and a great way to end your summer or kick off the fall season.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Moab’s natural amphitheaters, this festival offers unique live performances over two weeks from late August through mid-September. Whether you’re a seasoned music enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable cultural experience, the Moab Music Festival provides an unforgettable way to enjoy music and nature.

Make sure you plan ahead for this one, though, as tickets go on sale in the spring and often sell out.

4. Go ATV Riding in Southern Utah

ATV riding in Southern Utah is a great way to enjoy Utah’s fall weather, especially at the UTV Takeover event at Sand Hollow State Park. Held in mid-October, this event is packed with off-roading fun against a backdrop of amazing red rock landscapes and dunes.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to off-roading, there’s plenty to enjoy on the trails. Take in the views, feel the rush, and tackle the rugged terrain. If you’re looking for an exciting fall outdoor experience, the UTV Takeover is the place to be!

5. Visit a Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze

Embrace the charm of autumn by exploring Utah’s best pumpkin patches and corn mazes. These festive farm adventures offer timeless fun, from picking vibrant pumpkins to winding through intricate corn mazes.

While Green River doesn’t have many local pumpkin patches or corn mazes, there are several options within a reasonable driving distance:

Kuwahara’s Pumpkin Patch & Thriller Park: Draper, UT

Offers a variety of pumpkins, a corn maze, and family-friendly Halloween attractions. Located approximately 3.5 hours northwest of Green River.

Wilkerson Farm: Orem, UT

Features a corn maze, pumpkin patch, and fall fair with carnival rides and food trucks, about a three-hour drive northwest of Green River.

Cornbelly’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Fest: Lehi, UT

Known for its extensive corn maze, pumpkin patch, and numerous fall activities suitable for all ages. Approximately three hours and 15 minutes northwest of Green River.

Glen Ray’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch: Spanish Fork, UT

This seventh-generation farm offers a corn maze, pumpkin patch, giant slides, and train rides—around three hours northwest of Green River.

6. Go Camping Under Utah’s Starry Autumn Skies

With mild temperatures, fall is a great time for stargazing. Set up at one of Utah’s state parks or remote spots for a memorable night outdoors. Take in views of the Milky Way lighting up the sky, relax around the fire, and share stories with friends and family. The crisp air and open skies make fall camping in Utah an ideal way to enjoy nature.

7. Experience Fall Fishing in Utah’s Lakes and Rivers

Green River is a premier fishing destination, especially in the fall, as fish are highly active and preparing for winter. The river is renowned for its clear waters and abundant trout population, offering excellent opportunities for anglers. During the fall, you can expect to catch brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout.

Flaming Gorge Reservoir is also noteworthy if you’re looking for a spot outside of Green River. Located upstream of the dam, the reservoir offers fishing for species like lake trout, kokanee salmon, and smallmouth bass.

8. Visit Utah’s National Parks

Make time to explore Utah’s stunning national parks this fall. October offers a unique chance to enjoy these natural wonders with fewer crowds. Experience breathtaking vistas that showcase the vibrant autumn colors and dramatic landscapes. Each park, from Zion to Arches, offers hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing opportunities. The cooler temperatures make outdoor adventures comfortable.
